Jane woke to the soft sound of birds. She was lying in a small camp. Where was she… then it all came back, the ambush, the running, the fear, the man with the crossbow… was it a dream? She was in a camp; could it be the one her friends were in last night? Could they have just gotten drunk and passed out? She remembered they had alcohol.
She slowly rose and looked to her right. Sleeping next to her was the man. She leaped to her feet, which shot pain through her leg and she blacked out.
She woke again in the same campsite. She looked around and saw the man, Trent, poking around in a fire nearby where she was sitting.
“Your awake, good.” Trent mumbled.
Jane slowly lifted herself up and saw a small glint of silver jutting out of her leg.
“Why didn’t you take that out while I was asleep?” Jane bawled.
“I couldn’t because you’d go into shock while you were asleep, and then you wouldn’t be able to drink the anaesthetic I have and you would have died” Trent said, his expression still as unreadable as ever.
“Are you always this uncaring?” Jane asked bitterly
“Yes” Trent said simply.
“Can you take this thing out of my leg now please” Jane whined
“If you shut up and keep quiet, I’d do anything” Trent snapped
Trent slowly moved towards her and slipped on a thick glove.
“Are you ready?” Trent asked
“Just do it” Jane said as she picked up a stick and placed it in her mouth.
Trent clamped his hand over the silver jutting out of her calf and pulled. The bolt didn’t budge. Jane screamed in pain but it was muffled by the stick. Trent braced himself and tore the bolt from her leg. Jane whimpered as blood started to spurt from her leg. Trent handed her a bottle.
“Drink” he ordered.
Jane guzzled down the liquid and sighed as she finished the bottle. She cringed as Trent wrapped bandages around the wound.
“Keep off the leg” Trent said
“Thanks” Jane said sarcastically.
